Dance Music For Nerds

…is not enough to end your fears…

Endings and beginnings, hold and release, ebb and flow…that’s the way things go; such a cliche in a cliche filled world. But, cliche’s have their place. When you are not feeling too articulate and want to convey what you’re feeling in 10 words or less a cliche is a nice thing to fall back on. Today I am a cliche. Sitting in a coffee shop, papers scattered around me, typing on my laptop with headphones on. What did winamp just decide to pop on for my listening pleasure? A great song by The Russian Futurists, entitled “Let’s Get Ready to Crumble” Now, lets all sing along:

I do pop ’cause that’s what my heart goes, I don’t call it art, no sir
That denotes that when I wrote it I had other motives
We’re never saying what we mean, it’s all Silver Screens and lights
And new heights of drama comma tension and clenchin’ fists
Love consists of on and off and a built for two coffin
When it’s summed up, the rest is a hoax and some jokes
That’s been drummed up by the suits and
They’re choking out your life in chunks from nine to five and

You ain’t never gonna get a second back

So come on let’s lose control, we’ll sell our souls to Rock and Roll and hope
We’ll die before we get old; into the wind we’re tossin’ armfuls of caution
Even when it all goes to Hell, our love for one night was pure as sunlight and
Our great big happy ending is still a dream trapped in a Guillotine

I write words ’cause these are the things I can’t say but I’ll sing to you
And I know that it’s all a cop-out but my heart, it just pops out of joint
Here’s the point girl, you should be flattered at how my words they just scatter and
Drop, to the floor ’cause you keep me nice and sore and cold down to the core
But I wouldn’t take a single second back

So come on let’s lose control, we’ll sell our souls to Rock and Roll and hope
We’ll die before we get old; into the wind we’re tossin’ armfuls of caution
Even when it all goes to Hell, our love for one night was pure as sunlight
Our great big happy ending is still a dream trapped in a Guillotine

It takes about three listens before this song is stuck in your head and must be played over and over again.

Endings lead to beginnings, and though what’s around the corner may look full of promise and excitement I am still forced to glance over my shoulder and shed a tear for what is being left behind. Good-bye undergrad classes, good-bye DJ’ing and promoting, good-bye apartment for the last 5 years, good-bye relationship that has been my life for the last 7 and a half years, good-bye Hello Kitty, good-bye Madonna posters, good-bye Christie…the last year you have admittedly put me through hell and been a selfish person as you enter this new phase of your life…but, you and all that you entail will be missed…sorely…understatement of the year.
Hello Ph.D. Program, hello Teaching, hello Research, hello new apartment, hello single life, hello all the things I’ve left behind during the last 7 years…hours of record shopping, driving to shows, having real friendships…I look forward to it all…yet, I still can’t help but look back…each time I do, however, there are fewer tears…now it is usually with a knowing wink and a smile. To quote the song quoted above, “But I wouldn’t take a single second back.”

Well, that isn’t exactly true, but I am on my way. Just got my acceptance letter from the Ph.D. program in Biomedical Physics, including a full assistanship. I will be doing research with Dr. Lu starting this summer in the Biomedical Laser Laboratory.
Now, if I can just finish this heavy-ass course load I am burdened with this semester…Offer Letter

Dude, you’ve got to give me time to guess…

In a week filled with news of deaths and dying the one that has had the most impact; actually the only one to have an impact on me was that of comedian Mitch Hedburg. Thanks for the laughs, rest in peace.
